Drive up Route 17 West toward Monticello, and you see it: a green glass peak knifing its way above the ridge ahead. It’s the mark of a reawakened Catskills legacy: the Resorts World Catskills casino, newly opened on February 8. For a ride, call Warwick Valley Car Service

The casino, which will eventually house multiple hotels and entertainment options, greeted visitors with 150 live table games and more than 2,000 slot machines on its 100,000 sq ft casino floor.

And these aren’t the usual, run-of-the-mill games: Try to grab a butterfly from the “4D” slots, as it appears to flutter in front of you and your seat shakes in response. Make a bet on Pai Gow Tiles, a live table game that appeals to the Asian gambler. Of course, there are old-fashioned poker slots and familiar table games like roulette, baccarat, and blackjack, too.

Those willing to make a bigger bet have the High Limit room, a quieter space with a few table games and high-limit slots. Even-higher rollers — referred to as “whales” in casino-talk — will eventually have their own private, butler-appointed gaming salons in the attached all-suite hotel (we’re looking at you, Ben Affleck and Tobey Maguire).

If you want a break from gambling, you’ll be able to grab a bite at many restaurants. Right now, there are fine-dining and casual restaurants in the casino’s Asian wing, and the Doubletop sports bar and grill (which is equipped for sports betting as well, once the state legalizes it) on the casino floor. Celebrity chef Scott Conant will soon open his Cellaio steakhouse onsite as well. Thirsty gamblers can hydrate at two other bars on the casino floor: The Empire Lounge and Bar 360, both of which have stages that will host performances a few times a week, for which you can take car service from Warwick Valley Car Service.

Resorts World hopes to book big entertainment at the Epicenter, a multipurpose event space that can seat 2,500. Walls of windows on the mezzanine level of the Epicenter will allow for a “skybox” experience of performances.

Sure, gambling is for adults, but Resorts World isn’t ignoring the littler population: the Kartrite hotel and indoor waterpark will open in early 2019, promising tons of kiddie fun.

The casino sits on property that was once part of the Concord, a legendary Borscht-Belt hotel. Its beloved Monster golf course hasn’t been left behind, as it’s being renovated into modern, Rees Jones-designed 18-hole links.
